Sodium HydroSulfite (Sodium Dithionite)

Sodium HydroSulfite (Sodium Dithionite)

Sodium Hydrosulfite, also know as Sodium Dithionite (SDT) is a strong and reactive reducing agent in many different industries.

History of Sodium Dithionite

Sodium Hydrosulfite, also know as Sodium Dithionite had been developed at the beginning of the 20th century and was first applied for textile printing. Due to structural change in the textile industry, the importance of the application for the bleaching of wood pulp in the paper industry increased continuously.

Applications of Sodium Hydrosulfite

Sodium hydrosulfite is used as a reducing agent in aqueous solutions, sulfonating agent , chelating agent and decolorizing agent in organic reactions. It finds application in water treatment, gas purification, cleaning, leather, foods, polymers, photography, and many others. It is involved in chemical enhanced oil recovery to stabilize polyacrylamide polymers against radical degradation in the presence of iron. It plays an important role to determine the iron content in soil chemistry.

In textile industries Sodium Hydrosulfite serves as a bleaching or reducing agent during the dyeing process. Sodium dithionite is also used to strip dyes from dyed textiles and reduce iron oxide stains to ferrous oxide. Sodium dithionite may also be used as a bleach for leather.

Paper industries use Sodium Hydrosulfite for bleaching of the wood pulp and producing white paper.

In chemical industries, Sodium hydrosulfite (sodium dithionite, Na2S2O4) is an inexpensive and safe reducing agent, which for example enables the reduction of aromatic nitro and diazonium compounds to anilines. It is also used in drecuction of heavy metals such as chromium, manganese, molybdenum or tungsten in waste water..

In mining industries Sodium dithionite is used for cleaning “iron stains” off of minerals such as Kaolin clay.

Sodium dithionite is also a bleaching and reducing agent for food products.

Anothe important application of SDT is in conservation treatment. SDT) is mainly used for iron stain removal from both organic and inorganic substrates, and occasionally to treat corroded copper and silver artifacts

Caution!

Moisture and air sensitive. Keep the container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, acids and water. It may decompose on exposure to air and moisture
